activity
noun
The quality or state of being active.
Example: The only activity which was becoming less popular over these years was going to the theatre.
dramatic
adjective
Sudden and striking (of an event or circumstance) .
Example: Reading saw a dramatic drop in popularity.
elderly
adjective
(of a person) old or ageing.
Example: Most elderly people are hiking nowadays in their spare time.
free time
noun phrase
Time available for hobbies and other activities that you enjoy. spare time.
Example: This graph shows the kinds of activities done by old people in their spare time or free time.
generally
adverb
In most cases; usually.
Example: We can see that generally the activities listed have been increasing in popularity amongst the elderly.
hiking
noun
The activity of going for long walks, especially across country.
Example: We can see that generally the activities listed have been increasing in popularity amongst the elderly, with hiking.
internet
noun
The Internet is a vast network that connects computers all over the world.
Example: This century, hiking, reading, going to the theatre and surfing the Internet have all been increasing in popularity.
leisure activity
noun phrase
An activity chosen for pleasure, relaxation, or other emotional satisfaction, typically after work and other responsibilities are done.
Example: The chart gives information about the kinds of leisure activity engaged in by three distinct groups.
migrant
noun
A person who moves from one place to another, especially in order to find work or better living conditions.
Example: Half the migrants from non-English-speaking countries also go to see a film.
overall
adverb
Taken as a whole; in all.
Example: We can see that generally the activities listed have been increasing in popularity amongst the elderly and watching TV being the most popular overall.
popularity
noun
The state or condition of being liked, admired, or supported by many people.
Example: We can see that generally the activities listed have been increasing in popularity amongst the elderly.
reflect
verb
(of a surface or body) throw back (heat, light, or sound) without absorbing it.
Example: The popularity of the library with new migrants may reflect the financial circumstances of these new citizens.
steeply
adverb
By a very large or sudden amount.
Example: Going to the theatre declined steeply from 50% to 30%.
surfing
noun
The activity of moving from page to page or site to site on the World Wide Web.
Example: This century, hiking, reading, going to the theatre and surfing the Internet have all been increasing in popularity.
theatre
noun
A building or outdoor area in which plays and other dramatic performances are given.
Example: The only activity which was becoming less popular over these years was going to the theatre.
widely
adverb
Over a large area or range; extensively.
Example: Zoos are visited most by half of the English-speaking migrants compared to just over 40% of those born in Canada and approximately 35% of the migrants born where English is not widely spoken.
